Apple Prepares to Launch First ‘Low-Cost’ Mac Laptop in Early 2026

Apple is making a major strategic move by developing its first truly “low-cost” Mac laptop. This device is reportedly aiming to compete directly with Chromebooks and entry-level Windows PCs. The new laptop, internally codenamed ‘J700,’ is currently undergoing active testing and is in the early stages of production with overseas suppliers. Sources familiar with the matter suggest Apple plans to launch the device in the first half of 2026.  

Targeting a Sub-$1,000 Price Point

The primary goal of the J700 is to attract a segment of buyers previously excluded by Apple’s premium pricing. While Apple’s current entry-level MacBook Air starts at $999, the new model is expected to retail for “well under $1,000.” Some reports suggest a possible base pricing range could fall between $599 and $700. This pricing strategy places the Mac ecosystem within reach of students, educators, and first-time Mac buyers who typically gravitate toward more affordable Windows laptops or Chromebooks.  

Strategic Component Trade-Offs

To achieve this competitive price, Apple is reportedly utilizing less-advanced components than those found in its flagship models. The key component changes include:  

• iPhone Processor: The J700 is expected to use an A-series iPhone processor (such as a variant of the A18 Pro or A19 Pro chip) instead of the M-series chips found in current MacBooks. Internal tests, however, suggest this smartphone chip can still outperform the Mac-optimized M1 chip used in laptops just a few years ago. This ensures capable performance for daily tasks.  
• LCD Display: The laptop will feature a lower-end LCD screen. This is a departure from the high-end Liquid Retina or Mini-LED displays. The screen size will also be the smallest of any current Mac, likely slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air.  
• Connectivity: The use of an A-series chip may mean the device will only support standard USB-C ports, potentially leaving out support for Thunderbolt.  

Aimed at Students and Casual Users

This new machine is specifically designed for users who primarily browse the web, work with documents, or perform light media editing. It is also positioned as an alternative to the entry-level iPad and keyboard combination. It will offer better battery life and the full flexibility of macOS, appealing to users who prefer a traditional laptop form factor. The launch is part of a broader refresh. Apple has reportedly completed work on the M5 MacBook Air, also expected in early 2026, demonstrating an extensive roadmap for the Mac platform.
