He identifies one of the platform’s greatest challenges in 2026: distinguishing between human-generated content and AI-synthesized media, which is becoming nearly indistinguishable from reality. This shift is redefining the value of authenticity and challenging traditional notions of truth online.

Emphasizing Real Content Verification

Through a post on Threads, Mosseri admitted that large platforms face significant pressure to identify and label AI-generated content. While detection systems may work initially, he predicts that as AI technology advances, the ability to differentiate will diminish, making detection alone an unsustainable solution.

Instead, Mosseri proposes a shift from chasing fakes to confirming authenticity: “marking real content at the source.” By embedding verification at the content creation stage, platforms can ensure that users know what they are viewing is genuinely captured by humans, not artificially generated.

Blockchain-Enabled Content Authentication

A tangible approach includes collaborating with camera and hardware manufacturers to implement cryptographic signatures at the moment of capture. This establishes a “chain of custody” that certifies the content originates from real devices and remains unaltered by AI. Platforms could then display verified authenticity markers confidently, enhancing trust in the media.

Mosseri also emphasizes that AI labels must work alongside creator credibility signals. In an era where personal images and content can be easily faked, the relationship between viewers and creators becomes a critical value point. Platforms should provide tools that allow users to assess which creators are trustworthy sources and which are primarily AI-generated content producers.

Looking ahead to 2026, Mosseri predicts that audiences will gravitate toward raw, human-centric content—such as natural lighting and slight imperfections—as these features are difficult for AI to replicate.
