
Interpreter Brings Real Time AI Translation to Japanese Games
While modern games often launch with multiple language options, many legendary Japanese games from past generations still lack official English versions. To address this long standing barrier, software developer Bertrand Quenin has introduced an open source project called Interpreter, a tool designed to translate Japanese text from game screens into English in real time while playing.
Interpreter works by capturing on screen Japanese text and instantly translating it, allowing players to understand dialogue, menus, and story elements without pausing the game or relying on external guides.
Fully Offline AI Translation With Privacy in Mind
What makes Interpreter stand out is its 100 percent offline operation. The tool does not rely on cloud services, paid APIs, or external servers. Instead, it performs all processing locally on the user’s machine.
Interpreter uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to detect Japanese text on screen, then processes it through a large language model (LLM) running locally to produce English translations. This approach not only keeps the tool free to use, but also ensures maximum privacy, as no captured text or images are ever sent outside the user’s computer.
Powered by MeikiOCR and Sugoi V4
Interpreter combines two major open source technologies. The first is MeikiOCR, a project specifically trained to recognize Japanese text in video games, including pixel based retro fonts that are traditionally difficult for OCR systems. The second is Sugoi V4, a language model optimized for Japanese to English translation.
Users can choose between two display modes. One option shows translations in a banner at the bottom of the screen similar to subtitles. The other overlays translated text directly on top of the original in game text for a more seamless visual experience.
Platform Support and Performance Notes
Interpreter is designed to work across Windows, Linux, and macOS. On Windows, installation is handled through a simple PowerShell script. While initial startup can be slow due to language model loading, the developer recommends minor interface adjustments and enabling local model caching to significantly improve performance and accuracy over time.
Once configured, the tool becomes smoother and more responsive during extended play sessions.

Strong Community Response and Use Cases
Early feedback from gaming communities such as ResetEra and Reddit has been highly positive. Players have highlighted its usefulness for titles like Persona: Anomalous Tower Chronicle and classic Japanese games running on emulators such as RPCS3.
Although some stability and compatibility issues remain in certain display modes, the project is widely viewed as a powerful first step toward unlocking decades of Japanese games previously inaccessible due to language barriers.
