Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 Confirmed to Continue Using Unreal Engine 4

Time has flown by for the ambitious Final Fantasy VII Remake project, which has now reached its second major installment. Development of the third and final chapter is progressing steadily and is reportedly nearing completion. The series has also expanded to new hardware platforms, including newer consoles, reflecting strong demand from fans across different ecosystems.
One detail that players may have noticed in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is how closely its overall gameplay feel aligns with the first installment. This consistency is largely due to the continued use of Unreal Engine 4, the same engine that powered Final Fantasy VII Remake. Despite being positioned as a next generation experience, the technical foundation remains familiar.
In a recent interview with GameSpot, director Naoki Hamaguchi shared an update on the development status of the third remake installment. According to him, the game is already playable internally, and its official title has been decided, though it has not yet been publicly revealed.
Hamaguchi also confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 will continue to use Unreal Engine 4. The primary reason is development stability and efficiency. The team is highly experienced with this engine, and maintaining the same technical framework allows for a smoother production process. He also noted that Unreal Engine 5 was previously evaluated, but at the time it still lacked several features required for their development goals.

In addition, Hamaguchi revealed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is already running smoothly on Nintendo Switch 2, with only minor frame rate adjustments needed for optimization. This should reassure fans who were impressed by Square Enix’s recent console ports, as it suggests continued long term support across multiple platforms.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is a modern reimagining of the legendary JRPG series, rebuilt specifically for contemporary hardware using Unreal Engine 4. Players follow Cloud and his allies on a journey through a richly reimagined fantasy world as they oppose the powerful Shinra Company and its exploitation of the city of Midgar. Rebirth represents a major turning point in the remake universe, setting the stage for the climactic conclusion in Part 3.
