Google has announced a significant upgrade to its online safety and privacy tools, expanding its ability to help users locate and remove sensitive personal information from search results. The update enhances the Results About You tool and introduces more powerful controls for handling nonconsensual intimate imagery.
As concerns around data misuse and identity theft continue to grow, Google’s latest changes aim to give users greater control over how their personal information appears online.
Stronger Protection for Sensitive Personal Data
The upgraded Results About You tool can now better detect highly sensitive information such as government issued identification numbers. This includes passport numbers, driver’s license details, and social security identifiers.
Users can submit partial information, such as the last four digits of an ID number, through the Google app or web interface. Google’s system then scans search results to identify pages that may contain matching data. When a match is found, users receive alerts and can request removal directly from search results.
This proactive approach significantly reduces the risk of identity theft by making critical personal data harder to discover through search.
Faster Removal of Non Consensual Intimate Images
Google has also improved its tools for reporting non-consensual intimate imagery, including AI generated deepfake content. Users can now report such images directly from search results using the three dot menu and selecting Remove result.
A key improvement is the ability to submit removal requests for multiple images at once, streamlining the process for victims and reducing the emotional burden of repeated reporting.
Safekeeping System Prevents Reappearance
Once content is removed, Google’s new Safekeeping system helps prevent similar images or data from resurfacing in the future. The system acts as a preventive filter, continuously monitoring search results to block reindexed content that resembles previously removed material.
Google emphasized that any personal data provided for scanning purposes is protected using high level encryption and is only used by automated systems designed to locate matching content.
Search Removal Versus Source Removal
It is important to note that Google’s tools remove content from search results, not from the original websites hosting the information. However, since search engines serve as the primary gateway to online content, removal from search dramatically reduces public visibility and potential harm.
For many users, this represents a practical and effective first line of defense when dealing with privacy violations.
Gradual Global Rollout
The enhanced scanning for ID numbers is currently rolling out in select regions, including the United States, with broader global availability planned in the near future. The updated image reporting tools are expected to reach most users within the coming days.
