Sony Launches Monthly PlayStation 5 Rental Service with PlayStation Flex in the UK

Sony has officially launched a new monthly console rental program called PlayStation Flex, starting with a pilot rollout in the United Kingdom. The initiative allows players to rent a PlayStation 5 through affordable monthly payments instead of purchasing the console outright.
The move reflects a broader industry shift away from large upfront hardware purchases toward subscription style access, making current generation gaming hardware easier to adopt.
Partnering With Raylo for Console Leasing
To deliver the service, Sony has partnered with Raylo, a London based fintech firm specializing in consumer electronics leasing. Through this partnership, users can rent a PS5 with no upfront payment, choosing from contract lengths of 12, 24, or 36 months.
The longer the contract, the lower the monthly fee, giving players flexibility based on budget and commitment level.
Monthly Pricing Breakdown
As an example, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (825GB) with a DualSense controller is offered under the following plans:
- 36 month contract: approximately $12.50 USD per month
- 24 month contract: approximately $13.20 USD per month
- 12 month contract: approximately $18.40 USD per month
- Flexible monthly plan (cancel anytime): approximately $24.60 USD per month
These prices make the PS5 accessible for just a few hundred dollars spread across the year, instead of a single large purchase.
What Makes PlayStation Flex Stand Out
PlayStation Flex includes several benefits beyond simple hardware access. Subscribers receive free next day delivery, a 14 day satisfaction period allowing returns, and full device protection for as long as the rental contract remains active.
At the end of the contract, users can choose to upgrade to a newer console, continue renting the same device, purchase the console outright, or return it with no additional obligation.
Cost Comparison Versus Buying
Over a three year period, total rental costs are roughly comparable to buying a new PS5 outright, estimated at around $440 to $500 USD depending on configuration. However, the rental model removes the need for upfront spending and includes long term hardware coverage, which may appeal to budget conscious players or those who prefer flexibility.
The sign up process is handled entirely online via Raylo’s website and includes a financial check that does not affect credit scores.
A Strategic Experiment by Sony
PlayStation Flex appears to be a calculated experiment by Sony to expand its console audience, especially among users hesitant to commit to high one time hardware costs. It also provides Sony with a way to manage inventory and keep users within the PlayStation ecosystem longer.
For now, the program is limited to the UK, and Sony has not confirmed whether PlayStation Flex will expand to other regions, including SEA markets. If successful, however, this rental based approach could signal a major shift in how consoles are distributed globally.
