How to Play Metal Gear Solid 4 After the 2026 Digital Delisting

Following the launch of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, Konami has quietly removed two classic entries from digital storefronts. As a result, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD are no longer available for individual purchase.

Previously, players could still buy Metal Gear Solid 4 digitally on PlayStation 3. Meanwhile, Peace Walker HD remained accessible through backward compatibility on Xbox platforms. However, that option has now disappeared.

What Exactly Was Removed

Konami has removed Metal Gear Solid 4 from the PlayStation Store entirely. At the same time, Peace Walker HD vanished from multiple storefronts. These include PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Despite this change, existing owners can still download and play their purchased copies. Physical disc versions also remain fully functional. However, new digital purchases are no longer possible through standalone listings.

The Only Digital Option Left

For new players, the only remaining digital path is Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2. This collection bundles both titles together for modern platforms.

Metal Gear Solid 4 in the collection offers improved resolution and smoother performance. However, the original online features no longer exist. In contrast, Peace Walker maintains visual parity with its HD remaster while restoring cooperative gameplay support.

Although the bundle delivers technical upgrades, it also comes at a higher price point than the original standalone versions.

Why Existing Copies Are Now Rare

Because Konami removed these listings without prior notice, existing digital licenses have gained unexpected value. Players who own the games on PlayStation 3 or Xbox platforms now hold versions that new users cannot legally obtain.

In other words, if you already own them, you now possess genuinely rare digital content.

What’s Included in Master Collection Vol. 2

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 unifies several important entries into one package. Alongside Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker, the collection also includes Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel.

Additionally, players gain access to bonus materials. These include art galleries, music tracks, and an in-depth database covering lore and development history.

Story-wise, Metal Gear Solid 4 follows Solid Snake five years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 2. Aging rapidly, Snake faces Liquid Ocelot while attempting to dismantle The Patriots. Peace Walker, on the other hand, explores Big Boss’s rise as a mercenary leader after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3.

Release Platforms and Date

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 launches on August 27. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
