Bluepoint Games Faces Possible Closure After Years of Acclaimed Remakes

Report Indicates Bluepoint Games May Be Closing Soon

A new report from Bloomberg has sent shockwaves through the game industry, claiming that Bluepoint Games, a long-standing studio under Sony Interactive Entertainment, is preparing to shut down as early as March. The news arrives amid a wider wave of layoffs and studio closures affecting developers across the global games market.

Bluepoint Games earned its reputation through meticulous remake and remaster projects, most notably Demon’s Souls and multiple Uncharted releases on PlayStation platforms. These projects consistently received praise for technical polish and respect for the original source material.

From Remake Specialist to Strategic Shift

Although Bluepoint initially focused on remakes and remasters, the studio’s direction reportedly changed after Sony acquired it in 2021.

Observers note that high-profile cancellations and service shutdowns within Sony’s ecosystem appear to have influenced this decision. While some live service projects remain in development, confidence in that strategy has weakened, leading to difficult restructuring choices.

Dozens of Developers at Risk

Bloomberg reports that approximately 70 employees could be affected if the shutdown proceeds. This outcome has sparked concern among developers and fans alike, especially given Bluepoint’s consistent track record and its role supporting major AAA projects behind the scenes. Beyond headline remakes, the studio also contributed technical support to large-scale productions within Sony’s internal network.

Founded in 2006 by former developers from Retro Studios, the team behind Metroid Prime, Bluepoint steadily built a reputation for technical excellence. From 2009 onward, the studio worked closely with Sony while also handling notable ports such as Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Peace Walker for Konami.

What Happens Next Remains Unclear

At this stage, Sony has not officially confirmed the reported shutdown. It remains uncertain whether Bluepoint Games could be restructured, merged into another internal team, or potentially reformed under new ownership. For now, the situation highlights the growing instability even experienced studios face, despite strong reputations and critically acclaimed work.

As the industry continues to navigate rising costs, shifting strategies, and changing player expectations, the fate of Bluepoint Games serves as a sobering reminder that no studio is completely immune to restructuring pressures.
