According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On report, the upcoming iPhone 17e may not be as impressive as the iPhone 16e, a move Apple is making intentionally to clarify product positioning and better distinguish its lineup.
When Apple launched the iPhone 16e, it overshadowed the standard iPhone 16 by offering a surprisingly solid experience at a lower price. The internet was filled with reviews calling it a budget-friendly device with great value despite a few compromises. To avoid repeating that situation, Apple now aims to make the iPhone 17e a more clearly defined entry-level model, especially targeting first-time iPhone users.
Leaked details suggest that the iPhone 17e will be adequate but not exceptional compared to the standard iPhone 17. While the base model will feature a major upgrade with a 120Hz ProMotion display, the 17e will stick with a 60Hz screen. Its rear camera setup will also remain similar to the iPhone 16e, featuring a 48MP main sensor without major improvements.
However, the iPhone 17e will not be a complete downgrade. Apple plans to equip it with the new A19 chip, offering faster performance and better power efficiency. The design will also receive an update. Unlike the 16e, which retained the old notch design from the iPhone 14, the 17e is expected to adopt the modern Dynamic Island design seen in the standard models, giving it a more premium look.
With the iPhone 17 Pro introducing a fresh design and Apple facing lineup challenges, the iPhone 17e could still appeal to buyers seeking a new iPhone at a more affordable price point. Its biggest selling point will remain its lower cost when it launches in early 2026. Reports indicate Apple plans to manufacture only around 20 million units to avoid cannibalizing flagship sales.
Ultimately, the choice will come down to priorities. If you want a balanced smartphone with ProMotion display, improved cameras, and longer battery life, the standard iPhone 17 starting at $799 is the smarter pick. But if budget is a key factor and you’re willing to compromise on premium features, waiting for the iPhone 17e might be worth it.
