Dragon Quest XI S Becomes Best-Selling Game in Franchise with Over 9 million Copies

RPG fans are no strangers to the Dragon Quest series, which has long defined the Japanese role-playing genre. While earlier installments were known for their challenge, later entries gradually improved accessibility. Among these, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age stands out with a Definitive Edition featuring expanded content and more action-oriented gameplay, making it easier for newcomers to enjoy.

According to a Square Enix newsletter, Dragon Quest XI S has now sold over 9 million copies across all platforms, officially making it the best-selling game in the franchise. Previously, Dragon Quest IX, released in 2010, held the top spot. This milestone underscores the series’ continued popularity and hints that the upcoming Dragon Quest XII will need to leverage even more innovation and fan anticipation.

Interestingly, Dragon Quest X Online, a live-service title available exclusively in Japan, has not shared updated sales numbers in some time. Despite this, the ongoing support model suggests it continues to attract new players steadily. With Dragon Quest XI S’ success, the total franchise sales now exceed 95 million copies across all entries.

About Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI S continues the epic tale of a young hero fated to inherit the bloodline of legendary heroes. The protagonist sets out to journey across the kingdom and prove his worth to the king, only to be mistaken for a villain and pursued relentlessly. The Definitive Edition builds on the original console version with additional quests, new story content, and a 2D retro-style mode, providing both nostalgia and fresh experiences for fans of all ages.

Dragon Quest XI S’ milestone is not only a testament to the series’ enduring legacy but also a strong signal for Square Enix as it develops the next chapter in the franchise.
