Kyoto Xanadu Announced for PS5, Switch 2, and PC
During a recent Nintendo Direct, Falcom officially revealed Kyoto Xanadu, a brand-new entry in the Xanadu series that builds upon the foundation laid by Tokyo Xanadu. This time, the adventure moves to Kyoto, reimagined as the capital city in a parallel modern world.
Kyoto Xanadu blends classic side-scrolling action with fully 3D boss encounters, creating a hybrid combat experience that merges nostalgia with modern action design.
A Parallel Kyoto and a Dual-Life Adventure
Set in an alternate version of modern Japan where Kyoto serves as the capital, the story follows a group of young men and women who awaken mysterious powers as the “Chosen.” Players will experience a dual structure of daily life simulation and high-intensity combat.
Outside of battle, players can attend school, build relationships with friends both inside and outside campus, explore Kyoto’s city districts, and enjoy various side activities and mini-games. When missions begin, the gameplay seamlessly transitions into full-scale action combat.
Hybrid Combat: 2D Action Meets 3D Boss Battles
Most exploration and combat take place in 2D side-scrolling stages, featuring fast-paced action, combo-based attacks, and elemental mechanics that reward strategic play.
When facing powerful enemies, the game shifts into 3D action battles, delivering cinematic boss fights packed with unique mechanics. Key systems include:
- Soul Accel: Temporarily boosts combat performance for explosive offense
- Issen: A high-risk, high-reward counterattack activated by perfectly timed guards
This dual combat system is designed to offer both technical depth and visual spectacle, setting Kyoto Xanadu apart from traditional action RPGs.
Release Window and Platforms
Kyoto Xanadu is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC during Summer 2026 (June–August). A Steam store page is expected to go live in the future for players who want to follow updates and wishlist the game.
