Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 Posts Higher Launch Sales Than PS5 in Japan

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 Launches Stronger Than PS5 Version in Japan
It has already been one week since the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch 2, marking the end of the title’s long-standing PlayStation exclusivity that lasted nearly half a decade. As an enhanced remake of one of the most iconic JRPGs in gaming history, the Switch 2 version has received a notably positive response from fans, reflected clearly in its opening sales performance.
According to sales comparisons shared by video game journalist Paul Gale, the first week physical sales in Japan show that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch 2 reached 23,428 copies, surpassing the 20,889 copies sold by the PS5 version at launch. While the gap is not massive, the difference still amounts to several thousand units.
That said, both versions remain far behind the original Final Fantasy VII Remake release on PlayStation 4, which achieved an impressive 702,853 copies sold during its debut period in Japan.
These numbers highlight several interesting factors. First, it is difficult to deny the strong affinity Japanese gamers have for seeing Final Fantasy titles on Nintendo platforms. The franchise originally grew alongside Nintendo hardware, and even during periods when mainline entries were absent from Nintendo systems, Square Enix consistently released popular spin off titles on those platforms. As a result, the arrival of a full scale AAA Final Fantasy release on Nintendo Switch 2 naturally attracted significant attention, even amid ongoing criticism surrounding the Game Key Card format and ownership concerns.
Another important consideration lies with the PS5 version of Remake Intergrade, which launched in 2021. Existing PS4 owners were able to upgrade digitally rather than purchasing a new physical copy, likely reducing disc sales. Additionally, PS5 hardware availability in Japan at the time was constrained, with approximately 800,000 units in circulation. In contrast, Nintendo Switch 2 has faced no major stock shortages, boasting an installed base of over 4.1 million units in Japan at present.
