Ghost of Yōtei Confirms Japan-Only Setting, Sucker Punch Emphasizes Katana Legacy

Sucker Punch Confirms ‘Ghost’ Series Will Stay in Japan Only. The essence of Ghost is the katana-wielding hero

Amid the growing excitement for Ghost of Yōtei, developer Sucker Punch has firmly confirmed that the Ghost series will remain exclusively set in Japan, with no plans to move the setting to Europe or other regions. This clarification eases fans’ speculation about the future direction of the franchise.

The Unchanging Identity of Ghost of Yōtei

According to Ungeek, in a press interview, Brian Fleming, head of Sucker Punch, shared his perspective on the identity of the Ghost series as it reaches its second installment. Fleming explained that the core of the series is to let players experience “a living legend” by taking on the role of a character wielding a katana in historical Japan. He emphasized, “We believe the heart of Ghost lies in the katana. That’s essential. We can’t imagine a Ghost set in medieval Europe. It’s simply not what this series should be.”

While story elements may evolve, such as introducing new protagonists or different time periods, the series will maintain its signature beautiful Japanese atmosphere and expansive open-world landscapes, faithfully capturing the natural beauty of the Land of the Rising Sun. Fleming highlighted these points at the Tokyo Game Show, receiving widespread praise from fans.

He also added that while future installments may explore different eras, they will remain within historically significant Japanese periods from the late Heian period (around the year 1000) to the end of the Edo period (late 1800s) when samurai and katanas played pivotal roles in Japan’s history.

Ghost of Yōtei, first announced in 2024, will introduce new characters, compelling storylines, and new regions of Japan for players to explore. The narrative takes place 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, following a lone mercenary named Atsu, who seeks revenge while journeying through the stunning and harsh landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who murdered her family years before.
